The Zedonk

Have you ever seen a zedonk? Or maybe you call it a zonkey. Whatever you call it (if you call it anything), there's a half-zebra/half-donkey in Kensett, AR, and, though I've lived here for nearly five years, I had never seen it until Saturday night! It was your typical Saturday night in Searcy - we went to dinner and then...nothing. I was with my friends Rachel, Nick, and Gerren. Rachel and Nick had to study which left Gerren and I with absolutely nothing to do. It didn't take us long to realize that neither of us had ever been to see the zedonk! So I sent my friend Kari a text message to ask how to get to it (I knew she was in a movie so I couldn't call). She replied with what seemed like some pretty terrible directions: "Take the road by my apt and it will take you straight there. He's after a stop sign on the right."

So we set off to find the famous zedonk of Kensett. Once we drove through downtown Kensett (which, of course, took 3.2 seconds), we began to look to the right after every stop sign. We had no idea what we were looking for. We didn't know if we'd have to get out and snoop around in someone's backyard or if he was way far off from the road or what. After the fourth or fifth stop sign, I was beginning to think we'd missed him. But then we saw a little wire fence on the corner across from the stop sign at which we were currently sitting, and out of the darkness came walking toward us...the ZEDONK!

Of course we pulled over. The zedonk must've seen our headlights and decided to come visit. I'm pretty sure he has visitors all the time, and I suppose he enjoys being the most popular animal in White County. While I was taking Gerren's picture with the zedonk, a truck pulled up to the stop sign and just sat there. I was like, "Do you think they want something?" Then they pulled up by Gerren's car and this Arkansas good ol' boy stuck his head out the window (with his camera up to his face) and yelled, "Hey, how's the zedonk?"

"Oh, he's great!" we replied.

Then he asked, "Y'all want me to take your picture together with him?"

"SURE!"

So he got out and we proceeded to take pictures of each other with the zedonk. The zedonk loved every minute of it, of course. What a camera hog!

Gerren and the zedonk have a talk

Gerren + Callie + a boring Saturday night in Searcy = a visit with the zedonk

And now I'm sure I'll be expected to take Jamal and Tekia for a visit when they come for Spring Sing!

Oh man, that cracked me up! What a great way for me to start the day! (p.s. I've never actually SEEN a 'zedonk', but in a small, privately owned zoo around here they kept a baby donkey who had lost his mother in with the zebras because they said they were from the same 'family'...sorry I don't have the scientific word for it, but clearly they CAN mate!
